The band’s very first album “Something Wild” introduced us to some great technical Metal in 1997 and laid a path for what would be a great musical journey in the realm of the Finnish gods CHILDREN OF BODOM. Lacking the more mature sound of “Follow The Reaper”, it is closer to their second release “Hatebreeder”, but with more experiments as to what should define COB’s style. Mixing various elements like the complicated guitar-leads of melodic Death and fast rhythmic riffs of Power Metal, the unique blend found in “Something Wild” does create an addiction after too many listenings.
Take the scarred hand of the Reaper and follow him to the greatest depths of Hell. There you will find guitar-arrangements like you’ve never heard before, non-oppressive keyboard-melodies, complex tormented growling vocals and you just might encounter one of the rare polished rubies you only find once or twice a year. The assault on your senses will be invading, your vision probably blurry in the process, but once you’ve fully opened up to this record, you’ll understand that beneath the layers and layers of complicated instrumental euphoria paired with demonic vocals, there is talent. Metalheads out there: This is a CD you will not want to miss.

17. The Reflecting GodCulled from the bands ten year, six album career, Lest we Forget: The Best of Marilyn Manson features some of the greatest rock anthems of the last decade. Opening with “The Love Song” from Holy Wood, it proceeds to the first of a handful of cover songs which have made it as singles. The decadent, beefed up version of Depeche Modes “Personal Jesus” may not vary much from the original but the band do it the appropriate Goth justice; “Tainted Love” adds a menacing, industrial-glam to the electric northern soul of Soft Cells version; and the one that broke them into the UK mainstream, “Sweet Dreams” by the Eurythmics sounds as good as ever. So, they do a good cover but its really the fists in the air crowd-pleasing anthems that back up the bands iconic imagery. The high-energy signature tune, “Beautiful People” and tracks like “Disposable Teens” or “The Fight Song” typify the bands intelligent approach to rocknroll posturing. While many may have all the albums already, Lest We Forget is the perfect addition for anyone who likes the odd song but was too fearful to delve any further in the world of Marilyn Manson.
