Tutorial : Transferring Music into iTunes using iPodCopy.

This page shows you how to back your iPod music back into iTunes using iPodCopy. These instructions assume your iPod is linked to the iTunes library and is set to automatically update. The instructions work for all other less stringent configurations also.

Requirements
iPodCopy version 7 and iTunes version 7.
Your Windows XP user account should be an Administrator type account, not a “Restricted User” account..

We recommend you read all of these instructions through before starting.
Start off with your iPod disconnected and iPodCopy and iTunes not running.

1. Set up for Disk Use

In order for iPodCopy to see your iPod, your iPod has have “Disk Use Enabled”.
If you know your iPod has “Disk Use Mode” enabled you can skip this part and move on to section 2.

How you do this depends on which iPod you have…

Setting Disk Use – For all click wheel iPods….

Reset your iPod by pressing and holding the center key and Menu key. You need to hold these keys down together for about 5 seconds until your iPod resets and then quickly…..
…. press and hold the center key and Play/Pause key together until a check mark appears on the iPod screen. You have to do this before the Apple logo appears.
You can now let go of the iPod keys.

If you are having difficulty with this, you can use the method detailed for iPod shuffles below.
Don’t connect your iPod to your computer just yet!

Setting Disk Use – For iPod Shuffle and older iPods without click-wheels…

1. Start off with your iPod disconnected, iPodCopy and iTunes not running.

2. Start up iTunes.

3. Press and hold the CTRL, ALT and SHIFT keys on your computer – this prevents iTunes from automatically updating your iPod.

4. Connect your iPod – keep those CTRL, ALT and SHIFT keys held down until your iPod appears in the iTunes source list.

5. Click on the iPod icon in the iTunes source list.

6. Scroll down the iPod summary window and check “Enable disk use”.

7. Click “Apply”.

8. Eject your iPod from your PC by clicking the eject button next to the iPod icon in the iTunes source list. Then in your “My Computer” window – right click on your iPod drive and select “Eject” from the pop-up menu.

2. Starting up

At this point your iPod should not be connected – iPodCopy and iTunes should not be running.

1. Start up iTunes.

2. Press and hold the CTRL, ALT and SHIFT keys on your computer – this prevents iTunes from automatically updating your iPod.

4. Connect your iPod – keep those CTRL, ALT and SHIFT keys held down – until your iPod appears in the iTunes source list.

5. You can now start up iPodCopy.

3. Copying Music into iTunes

You can now select which music you want to copy into iTunes, if you want to select all your music, select “Music” from the list on the left and click “iTunes” in the iPodCopy control bar. Note that If your running the demonstration of iPodCopy you will be limited to 40 copies maximum.

If you need to select a subset of your music collection, browse your music using the Genre, Artist and Album lists and click the “iTunes” button to transfer it over to iTunes.

4. Shutting Down
When you have finished using iPodCopy, close the iPodCopy window.
Now eject your iPod from your PC by clicking the eject symbol next to your iPod in the iTunes source list.

If you need to reset your iPod again by pressing and holding the center key and Menu key. You need to hold these keys down together for about 5 seconds until your iPod resets.

5. An alternative method

iPodCopy can be used to disrupt the normal iPod and iTunes communications when it starts up.
