Archive – Discography
Posted on October 21st, 2009 No commentsArchive – Discography

Archive were formed by Darius Keeler and Danny Griffiths in 1994 from the ashes of the UK breakbeat act Genaside II. Together with the female singer Roya Arab and the young rapper Rosko John, the band released their first album “Londinium” on Island Records in 1996, a mix of dark Trip hop (in a similar vein to Massive Attack), electronica and progressive music. The album received moderate critical acclaim, but due to internal dispute the band split up later that year.
However, in 1997 Keeler and Griffiths reformed Archive with another female singer (Suzanne Wooder) and in 1999 released their second album “Take My Head”, a mix of pop and symphonic trip-hop far more melodic than its predecessor. The band have described this album as their least favourite of their albums.
Between 2002 and 2005 the band released three albums with singer Craig Walker (formerly of Power of Dreams) to growing popularity and critical acclaim, including a large following in France and Poland. These albums have seen Archive gradually turn away from their roots in Electronica and Trip hop and towards more psychedelic and progressive style of bands such as Pink Floyd, Mogwai, and The Secret Machines. The band also composed the soundtrack to the French film Michel Vaillant, released in November 2003.
Archive announced at short notice that Walker would not join the band’s tour in November 2004 “due to unforeseen circumstances”. Another statement from Darius Keeler hinted at personal problems keeping Walker from touring. In an interview with the TV station arte in late 2005, Keeler and Griffiths stated that Walker is in fact no longer with Archive and is working on a solo album, whereas Walker has stated that he left Archive due to personal differences with management and other band members.
In autumn of 2004, Archive announced that Dave Pen (Birdpen) would replace Walker on the Noise tour – due to the continuing personal problems between Walker and the rest of the band. During this same tour, Keeler and Griffiths met the singer Pollard Berrier at one of their shows in Vienna, Austria. The three began writing and rehearsing together, and were recording in Southside Studios, London, by September 2005.
In May 2006, Archive released “Lights”, from which the first single was “System”. Dave Pen contributed on three tracks of the album and Maria Q sang on four tracks.
They have been touring in Europe since 2006, with Dave Pen, Pollard Berrier and occasionally Maria Q as singers. As the critical reaction to their “Lights” tour has been excellent, they recorded a live DVD in Paris in January 2007.
Archive released their 6th album “Controlling Crowds” on March 30th 2009. The first single was entitled “Bullets”.
As of February 2009, Rosko John is “back in the Archive collective”, according to the official Archive newsletter.

All albums have scaned cover’s and rip is FLAC.About (FLAC)
FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec, a leading compression technique that preserves original audio quality while reducing file size. FLAC is an open-source, royalty-free format that has been adopted widely for its many advantages in digital audio reproduction.
Compression techniques take large files such as wave (.wav) files and reduce the data bits while preserving as much of the audio landscape as possible. A well-known audio compression format is MP3 (.mp3). MP3 files slim down bulky wave and compact disk (.cda) files to a fraction of
their original size, making MP3 an ideal format for portable audio players. The MP3 format allows a vast library of songs to fill a very small storage footprint. However, there is a trade-off in audio quality.
FLAC surpasses MP3 quality by preserving the original soundscape in exact detail. The FLAC format reduces the original file size by roughly 30-60% with no loss of quality, hence it is a lossless format. This differs from the MP3 format which is a lossy format, or a format that loses
quality in the conversion process.
One of the great strengths of FLAC is its very fast decoding time, or ability to stream even on modest hardware. Technical specifics in the framed architecture also allow it to be error resistant, in that each frame has the information it needs to decode itself. If a frame is corrupted, the
data lost in the stream is a mere blip. This differs from other types of lossless formats where the entire stream would essentially become corrupted.
Another feature of FLAC is that it can handle up to eight channels of audio for preserving surround sound recordings. FLAC is also a good choice for archiving audio CDs, as one can always use the FLAC file later to convert to future formats. A further advantage of FLAC is that it supports
replaygain, a technique for ensuring that recorded sound files play at the same volume level.
The only real disadvantage of FLAC files is that the compression ratio is not as steep as other codecs. Files will be somewhat larger. However, with all of the advantages of FLAC, this is a happy trade off for many audiophiles.
Considering the falling prices of flash cards, portable players, and storage devices, the FLAC format will likely only gain support. FLAC files can play on iPods and other portable devices, and on home or car compact disk players that support FLAC.

Neil Young – Comes A Time (1978)

Artist: Neil Young
Title: Comes A Time (1978)
Label: Reprise
Genre: Country rock, folk rock, rock
Released: October 21, 1978
Format: MP3 & Flac
MP3 Bitrate: CBR 320 kbps
Total Time: 34:09
Size: 151 MB MP3, 310 MB Flac (incl. 10% Recovery record)Comes a Time is a 1978 album by Neil Young, and a return to the country/folk rock sound of Harvest (1972). Many of the tracks are highlighted by harmony vocals from Nicolette Larson. Originally, it had started out as a solo record, but when Young played it for Reprise executives they asked him if he wouldn’t mind adding rhythm tracks to what he already had. Young agreed to this, and the end product was the Comes a Time that was released.
Recorded: Triad Recording, Ft. Lauderdale, FL; Columbia Recording Studio, London; Wally Heider Recording Studio, Hollywood; Woodland Sound Studios, Nashville; Sound Shop, Nashville, and Broken Arrow Ranch, Redwood City, CA, November 28, 1975 November 21, 1977
Producer: Neil Young, David Briggs, Ben Keith, Tim Mulligan

Review by William Ruhlmann:
Six and a half years later, Comes a Time finally was the Neil Young album for the millions of fans who had loved Harvest, an acoustic-based record with country overtones and romantic, autobiographical lyrics, and many of those fans returned to the fold, enough to make Comes a Time Young’s first Top Ten album since Harvest. He signaled the album’s direction with the leadoff track, “Goin’ Back,” and its retrospective theme augmented with an orchestral backup and the deliberate beat familiar from his number one hit “Heart of Gold.” Of course, Young remained sly about this retrenchment. “I feel like goin’ back,” he sang, but added, “back where there’s nowhere to stay.” Doubtless he had no intention of staying with this style, but for the length of the album, melodies, love lyrics, lush arrangements, and steel guitar solos dominated, and Young’s vocals were made more accessible by being paired with Nicolette Larson’s harmonies. Larson’s own version of Young’s “Lotta Love,” released shortly after the one heard here, became a Top Ten hit single. Other highlights included the reflective “Already One,” which treats the unusual subject of the nature of a divorced family, the ironic “Field of Opportunity,” and a cover of Ian Tyson’s folk standard “Four Strong Winds” (a country Top Ten hit for Bobby Bare in 1965).
